Famagusta, Northern Cyprus
The ancient walled city of Famagusta, originating from the Egyptians, offers an enthralling view of times long gone; craftsmen still fashion by hand a variety of pottery, copper and jewellery. The town is the site of the incredible Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, which was once the Cathedral of St Sophia, plus innumerable other historical treasures, such as the Tower of Othello, possibly built by the man on whom Shakespeare based one of his most famous plays.

Some of the best beaches in North Cyprus are nearby and it is a great place to stop on route to The Karpaz (Karpas) Peninsula where you will discover incredible untouched beauty and are more likely to meet a small herd of wild donkeys than other visitors. It is possible to reach Famagusta and the Karpaz Peninsula and return in just one day from Kyrenia, but it is much better to stay overnight. The Karpaz is a region of truly exceptional beauty, where you can drive for miles without seeing a sole.
Head north, a few miles up the coast, from Famagusta and you will find the ruins of Salamis. This was once the capital of Cyprus, and is acknowledged to be one of the world's most significant archaeological locations. Your visit to Famagusta could also include the monastery of St Barnabas and the icon museum and the tomb that is said to contain the remains of St Barnabas.
