Cyprus weather
Spring (March, April & May):
Many say this is the best time to visit Cyprus, a wonderful time for walking holidays, painters, photographers and nature lovers alike. The countryside is a mass of colour with orchids and wildflowers carpeting the paths and roadsides. Crops green in the fields with the mountain backdrop and magnificent blue skies. You can be sure the days will be warm but there is a chance of an odd shower so you could need an umbrella. The evenings can still get a bit chilly and an extra layer or two are needed. By mid May things are really beginning to warm up but you may occasionally need a light jacket in the evening.
Summer (June – August):
June, July and August are guaranteed hot sunny months, perfect for those who like to relax by the pool or on the beach. Watersports including windsurfing, sailing, jet-skis and waterskiing are available on many beaches. There are also centres for those interested in scuba diving. In late August you may like to spend a day in a Turkish mountain village picking carobs and learning how to make “PekMaz” Turtles nest on the beaches during the summer months; they are monitored by students from Europe and Turkey. Call in at the Aligadi Turtle Centre and perhaps see the turtles nesting at night or, if you are very lucky, hatching about a month later. Whatever you do you will need a light shirt to protect against the hot sun. Bring a hat and sunglasses and plenty of sun block or high factor screen and drink plenty of water.
Autumn (October & November):
Perfect weather for any outdoor activity, the sea is still warm enough for watersports.
With the temperature in the mid 20’s it’s ideal for walking, cycling or horse riding. Nature lovers, photographers, painters and birdwatchers will be enchanted. It’s also a good time to visit some of the many historical sites or perhaps spend a day picking olives and learning to make olive oil in the old traditional way. In November the nights are beginning to get a bit chilly again, so that extra layer of clothing may be necessary.
Winter (December – February):
Leave those cold winter days behind and enjoy some sunshine. Explore the wonderful countryside and mountains or stroll along the beach. Birdwatchers will find the island a haven for many birds at this time of year. If you want to celebrate Christmas, hotels and shops are decorated and there are bazaars, fairs and concerts. The Anglican Church in Kyrenia holds a carol service on Christmas Eve. New Year is a time for celebration here; enjoy the wonderful atmosphere with music, dancing, fireworks and a whole host of things to do and places to go. It’s still warm enough for an ice-cream or candyfloss. It can get windy and does rain sometimes; the nights can also be cold so bring a fleece waterproof coat and umbrella.
